Frequently Asked Questions
I have a question I know won't be on the list. How do I ask it?
Please e-mail liargametournament2011@gmail.com, and title it "Question". We will add it to this thread. When accounts become active, you're free to ask.
Why 100 million yen? Why not put it in dollars or something?
There are three reasons for this. Firstly, we wish to stay true to Kaitani's canon. That is the main reason.
Secondly, let us assume the total discussed was $1m. This number is less daunting than ¥100m, purely because there are fewer zeroes involved. $1,000,000 versus ¥100,000,000? The latter is a scary, impressive nine-digit number, simple as that. What's more, this game brings together people from all over the world. Everyone sees money in relative terms: pounds and Canadian dollars are as valid. It's better to keep it in yen, so everyone's singing from the same page.
The final reason is this: For various reasons, the figures will be broken down over the course of the game. Halve 100m, you get 50m. Halve 1m, you get 0.5m, or 500,000. The numbers wind up messier this way.
Does this mean my character has to be Japanese?
The short answer is yes. Again, for the sake of consistency, we ask the characters be Japanese. If you're unfamiliar/not comfortable with this, don't worry. Helpful links will be provided in due course. Do not be daunted.
There's a temptation to squeeze foreigners into the mix. I have it from a reliable source that in modern Japan, a very small percentage of the population is Foreignese, and the majority of those are still Asian. So we may as well keep them all Japanese, right?
The long answer is your character is really just an avatar anyway, so I wouldn't get too stressed about it... and there is a claimable characters thread here, just in case.
So why are we playing characters at all?
For the sake of consistency. Say an RPer quits, or has to drop out for personal reasons. It would make no sense for that character to just shrug and walk off if he/she is facing huge levels of debt. If we were just having players face off against one another, that directly jeopardises the others.
But if someone else wants to substitute for that player, so be it. The character profile would give the new RPer something to work from. It's as simple as that. And if this doesn't occur, there are other ways. Please examine this thread for more information.
So if the characters don't matter, why are you basing it in Japan at all?
It's all about the 100 million yen! See above.
But I'll essentially be playing this as myself, though, right?
For the most part, yeah. Which is why I wouldn't get too stressed about having a Japanese person as your avatar. You'll see how useful this will be in due time.
Okay, fine. Is there anything else I need to play?
Please have AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Aspects of this game will require you to talk with people in real-time. Also, it may be necessary to talk about things individually. By setting a standard type of messenger service, we can keep things straightforward, so to speak. If you don't have AIM, it's pretty simple to set up an account.... just drop a message if you need some help.
Is it worth me reading/watching the source material?
Liar Game is an ongoing manga series and can be viewed here. The artwork gets better. There have also been two TV drama adaptations of the series, plus a movie. You can find these via search engines such as Google (I shan't link here, because the URLs have a habit of changing).
It is not, however, mandatory to read these. It might give you an idea on the type of games to come, but they won't actually be the games. That would unfairly favour those who know the series well.
Can I play as my favourite character?
Claims are for original characters only. Please do not use characters from the canon. Again, it's a consistency thing. Also, although you're welcome to use existing characters as inspiration, we don't want to be seeing eight versions of the same person now, do we, hmmm?
Can I play as a character from a different universe?
Again, you may use them as inspiration, but remember the characters your playing are normal human munchkins. No superpowers, no fantasy elements to them, just run-of-the-mill people you might meet on the street.
Can I affiliate with you guys?
Sure! Just IM the admin, and we'll work it out.
Why are you running this game?
We wish to crown the true King of Liars. Nothing more, nothing less.
You haven't answered my question!
That wasn't a question. But if you have other queries, just send us an email. We'll put it up here, and you'll get a speedy response. When accounts go live and you think of something new, you'll be able to post here directly.
